Volunteer Appreciation Event Recognizes Service to the Maryland Food Bank

To mark National Volunteer Month in April, the Maryland Food Bank (MFB) recognized the contributions of the thousands of volunteers powering the fight against food insecurity. On April 26, 2025, volunteers gathered at the food bank’s Halethorpe warehouse for good food, connection, and learning. The event also recognized the 2025 Volunteer of the Year, Kate Murphy, who was selected by her peers to honor her 12 years of service to the food bank.
Volunteers are mission-critical for the Maryland Food Bank. In the 2024 fiscal year alone, 6,800 volunteers contributed 38,000 hours of service—equivalent to 20 full-time staff members! While most volunteers serve in the warehouse, packing and sorting food, there are other important roles in the FoodWorks kitchen, the Education & Demonstration Garden, and at the front desk answering phones or completing other administrative tasks.
